Trash Your Boring Elevator Speech--Today!

Trash your elevator speech! Do it today!

But why? Everyone says you need a 30- or 60-second elevator speech if you're job hunting or promoting yourself.

But after a while, elevator speeches all start to sound the same--full of trite phrases that don't mean much. Like this:

"I'm a results-oriented, hard-working, dragon-slaying, bottom-line, team player kinda guy (or gal)." In short, you're just like nearly everyone else out there. Blech!

Successful marketing demands that you distinguish yourself from your competition. Think of all the cash corporations lay out to convince you their products are less filling, faster, lighter, sexier, or tastier than the competitions'.

Elevator speeches often just spew jargon, leaving folks scratching their heads, wondering what does that man/woman really do? Like this:

I'm a solutions-driven business analyst/project manager and technical professional with over 20 years of experience enhancing company operations through skilled assessment of business processes and identification of technical solutions that improve efficiency and profitability.

No passion. Lots of jargon. Murky.

Don't t do that to your audience-or yourself. Instead of boring everyone within earshot with an elevator speech, wow them with a 2-minute profile.

This powerful relationship-creating tool does these things:
  • Explains what you do well, using precise vocabulary (NO vague statements like"I'm a good communicator" or "I get results);"
  • Provides a powerful, memorable story of you in action to demonstrate how good you are.We still remember the powerful stories of Homer and Aesop-and they've been dead for thousands of years.
  • Tells clearly what you want to do next (as best you know at the moment).
  • People who don't know those things can't help you very much in advancing your business or your job search.

The 2-minute profile is a great confidence builder, both for you and your listener. You'll make a credible impression of how employable you are and demonstrate your serious intent and enthusiasm. Compare this 2-minute profile with your elevator speech:

    WHAT I DO WELL
I love to manage big projects and events. I develop the vision, get people excited about working on them, and take great pride in ensuring that all the details are almost perfect. I'm also bilingual, and I enjoy breaking down language and cultural barriers that keep people from working together effectively.

ILLUSTRATION SHOWING HOW GOOD I AM
My employer told me he wanted to host a dinner to bring together people from our community and another ethnic group. He put me in charge of creating the event from start to finish. I met with two organizations in the other community to smooth over some misunderstandings from past encounters and generated interest in getting together. I conceptualized the event, found the right venue, designed the invitation, and oversaw three staff. I allowed them the freedom to create, while making sure the details were executed flawlessly. On the day of the event, I oversaw set up, greeted guests, and got conversation flowing. I also led icebreaker exercises that got people laughing and having fun as well as stimulating some thoughtful conversations. The event got rave reviews from everyone who attended-plus demands that I create another event soon. Right now, I'm at the beginning of my exploration.

WHAT I WANT TO DO NEXT
I'm looking at both Special Events Fundraising for major nonprofit organizations and planning corporate events.

    Here's the impact on your listeners: Know clearly what your current career goal is (what you want);
  • Understand what you contribute-your pattern of success
  • See how you are capable and qualified for roles you're talking about
  • Sensing your enthusiasm, gets involved in your campaign goal.
  • Because of these four things, they are motivated to either consider you for employment and/or help you reach more people who they know.
  • A boring elevator speech just won't do that. So stop doing it--now! No more lifeless, jargon-filled recitation of "facts" about you.

Instead, get people excited about you and what you're up to by crafting a two-minute profile.
